MARK PROCT Home Today Gone Tomorrow!

When it comes to the music business, Mark Proct is a lifer. He’s not a star, but he is one of those people essential to stars a journeyman working behind the scenes who helps to make what happens onstage under the lights possible. A music industry professional in Austin, TX since 1975, Proct has labored in an array of showbiz infrastructure jobs, from driving tour buses to running sound, running his own lighting company and tour coach businesses and working as an artists’ manager. In the process, he not only helped further the careers of employers and clients, he played a pivotal role in the growth of Austin into a world-renowned hub for music and musical creativity. In those roles, and others, Proct has been present at pivotal moments in the careers of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, the arc angels, Storyville, Vallejo, and others. A tireless amateur photographer, Proct was seldom without his camera, even as the music business took him and his musical compadres across the country and around the world. Now, after a lifetime of being behind the scenes, Proct is stepping out as the author of Home Today, Gone Tomorrow, a collection of rare, behind-the-scenes candid moments captured, as it were, on the run. These are not the glamor shots of carefully posed, manicured stars. Rather they are moments captured—backstage, in hotels, in recording studios, on city streets, behind the scenes.  It’s Proct’s gift that he was not only present in the moment, but had the presence of mind to capture it for the rest of us. Home Today, Gone Tomorrow not only catches musicians at pivotal moments in their lives, it also tells a larger story of the city of Austin, and its transformation from a sleepy college town to an international hub for music.

The Indy Cafe; Jonathan Levine , Art and Jonathan Levine Gallery , NYC!

As a youth in the 1980s, LeVine recognized the appeal of countercultural aesthetics including punk flyers, comics, graffiti and tattoos. Beginning in 1994, LeVine became an independent curator, organizing exhibitions at punk and alternative rock venues in the NY/NJ area such as: CBGB, Webster Hall, Max Fish, and Maxwell's. By promoting these visual art forms through group shows in venues that were home to their musical counterparts, LeVine gave a home to this nascent art movement, early on. In February 2001, LeVine opened his own gallery Tin Man Alley in New Hope, Pennsylvania. The gallery relocated to Philadelphia in late 2002. In January 2005, LeVine renamed and moved his gallery to the epicenter of the contemporary art world, Manhattan's Chelsea district. Jonathan Levine Gallery is committed to new and cutting edge art. Our roots go back to 1995, when Jonathan's life-long participation in punk and underground music grew into a curatorial experiment with the visual culture that surrounded him. We moved to Chelsea in 2005, with an eye towards honoring and connecting with the history and context of Post War art. In 2014, the gallery opened a second space on the ground floor of 557 West 23rd Street. We contribute to the dialogue by challenging the conventions of the canon — exploring the terrain of the high/low and everything in between. Our success in nurturing the careers of Shepard Fairey, Invader, Olek and others motivates us to continue being the voice for this cultural shift. The catalogues we publish, prints we distribute, and museum shows we help to produce reflect our dedication to our artists and community. At the same time, we aim to create an accessible and engaging gallery space.  http://jonathanlevinegallery.com

Willie Nile; If I Was A River.. New Music and Tour!

In his three and a half decades as a recording artist, Willie Nile has earned a reputation as both a fiercely committed rock ’n’ roller and a singularly insightful songwriter. It’s Nile’s introspective side that fuels If I Was A River, a deeply compelling ten-song collection that diverges from his usual sound, while affirming the remarkable melodic and lyrical skills that have long endeared the artist to his passionately loyal fan base.Working with Grammy-winning producer Stewart Lerman (Boardwalk Empire, Antony and the Johnsons, Loudon Wainwright III, Dar Williams) Nile recorded the material in an appropriately spare environment that helped to capture the songs’ intimacy and immediacy. He also employed the same Steinway Grand piano that he'd played 34 years earlier on the evening of the death of John Lennon, while both Lennon and Nile were recording at Manhattan’s Record Plant. When Nile was working on If I Was A River, the legendary piano was residing at Hobo Sound in Weehawken, NJ, where he recorded the new album with a minimum of embellishment or trickery.  If I Was A River also features some contributions from guitar master Steuart Smith (of Eagles/Rosanne Cash/Rodney Crowell fame) and multi-instrumental stringmaster David Mansfield (whose voluminous credits range from Bob Dylan to Johnny Cash to Yo La Tengo), along with backing vocals from singer-songwriter and frequent Nile co-writer Frankie Lee.It’s hard to think of many other artists who are doing some of their best work in the fourth decade of their careers, but Willie Nile continues to seek out new creative challenges and conquer new musical territory.“Doing this album was liberating in many ways,” he states. “I learned that it’s fun to change horses and take different roads from time to time as one travels through life, and I think I'll carry that lesson with me in the records that I make in the future.?

Bob Gruen, "See Hear Yoko" by Bob Gruen & Jody Denberg for Yoko Ono!

See Hear Yoko captures the rich complexity of Yoko Ono—woman, artist, activist, wife and mother—from her days with John Lennon through the present, with intimate portraits by the legendary rock-and-roll photographer Bob Gruen, and words by Ono herself, edited from conversations with Jody Denberg, rock radio’s “Voice of Austin, Texas.” Conceived expressly for Yoko Ono as a gift between friends on the occasion of her eightieth birthday, and published at her personal request, See Hear Yoko is legendary rock-and-roll photographer Bob Gruen’s tribute to an icon of contemporary American cultural history, from her days with John Lennon up through the present. Gruen, who served as personal photographer to Lennon and Ono during their years in New York City, has collaborated with his friend, Austin rock radio mainstay Jody Denberg, who edited twenty-five years of interviews with Yoko for the book’s text. In this breathtaking volume, Gruen has selected more than two-hundred classic color and black-and-white photographs that intimately illuminate the life of Yoko Ono at the height of her fame as a woman, wife, mother and avant-garde artist (who keeps creating, she says, because “That’s who I am.”) Yoko’s role as peace activist and artist underscores the enduring legacy of the era of rock-and-roll. See Hear Yoko reveals a modern woman in love, in ascension, in grief, in joy and in peace. Lavish and beautiful, mirroring the deeply personal design of the original volume given to Yoko herself, See Hear Yoko brings into focus an extraordinary woman and one of the most memorable periods in modern history.

Holly Stephey talks to S.R. Lore; The Playground of Life ,New Book

The Playground of Life: Charitable New Book of Poetry, from London Writer, Examines War Between Ego & the Divine Self.John Lennon was absolutely right, the world needs more love. Nobody knows this better than S.R. Lore who, after being diagnosed with a long-term health condition, has spent her entire life seeing the world from a critical yet positive perspective. She, like Lennon, is committed to bringing more humanity and peace to life’s proceedings. As an accomplished poet, Lore is finally publishing her first collection titled ‘The Playground of Life’  a small book with a boundless and powerful big message. The poems in 'The Playground of Life' are mostly from personal experiences on reflection. It analyses life and relationships, especially, love. As some of the poems are written at different periods in the author's life the tone and mood changes to reflect that time and situation.Furthermore, because S.R.Lore grew up with a long-term health condition, she started exploring the meaning of life from a spiritual aspect from an early age. The poems also relate to the conflicted role that one has with oneself when it comes to spiritual matters which she call 'the war between the ego and the divine self'. “I, like millions, have always struggled in a battle between spirituality and the ego. While most let these forces pass them by, I saw it as the perfect topic to focus on through poetry,” explains Lore. “It carries a very transformative message that the world needs to hear, particularly at the current time when discord has never been more prevalent.”But Lore’s project is far from personal gain, as she proudly explains.“50% of each sale will be donated to the UCL Hospital and FareShare, two organizations that have benefited me personally yet suffer from a severe lack of funding.‘The Playground of Life’, from Spiderwize,  http://amzn.to/1BPSWLW

Indie Cafe & Red Velvet Media ; Eilon Paz, Dust & Grooves !

Dust & Grooves: Adventures in Record Collecting is an inside look into the world of vinyl record collectors in the most intimate of environments—their record rooms. It all started out several years ago as nothing more than a way for photographer Eilon Paz to make use of his idle hours. Adrift in Brooklyn after emigrating from Israel, Eilon—a record collector on the side—thought it might be fun to start taking photos of people whose record collections were both larger and weirder than his own. Adopting this as his personal project, he began traveling the world, from Australia to Cuba and Argentina to Ghana, in pursuit of intriguing and memorable subjects. Unearthing the very soul of the vinyl community, the assembly of portraits he created quickly turned into the Dust & Grooves website. In the summer of 2012, Eilon launched a Kickstarter campaign that funded his road trip to shoot collectors throughout the American heartland, and since then, the project has been embraced by many friends and supporters who have volunteered to work with Eilon along the way. This year, Dust & Grooves expands even further, complementing the website’s cloud with a physical book that profiles over 130 vinyl collectors with photographic essays and in-depth interviews. Dust & Grooves has engaged and connected the underground community of record collectors. As well as becoming a go-to place for vinyl lovers, it maintains the integrity and history of vinyl, as well as the musical heritage that goes along with every record in these collections. As technology moves forward and many music formats go digital, Eilon’s endeavor helps keep the rich, warm, analog life of vinyl spinning. http://www.dustandgrooves.com
