Red velvet media with Ricky Bird... his solo debut, Lifer.

Byrd is probably most closely identified with the monstrous power chords that helped define Joan Jett and the Blackhearts’ platinum cover of “I Love Rock & Roll,” and ensure its eternal rotation daily throughout the universe. His blistering rhythms and soaring leads played equally powerful roles in the Blackhearts’ subsequent great hits. Byrd remains eternally grateful for the opportunity to orbit the globe more frequently than the space shuttle and live out the “Number One with a Bullet” dream most mortals only fantasize about. But after a dozen years, it was time for a change. And the confines of what Joni Mitchell has so poignantly called “the star making machinery” could never have satisfied, much less revealed, the soulful, complete musician and mature artist Byrd proves himself to be on what is, astoundingly, for a dude who’s been making major label albums for decades, his solo debut, Lifer. “Indeed, Lifer is a celebration of the type of compact, hooky songwriting and radiant guitar crunch that characterized classic rock and roll.” -Guitar World “Listen to Lifer and you’ll hear strains of a variety of classic rock, soul and blues artists that emerged during the 1960s and early ‘70s, from Otis Redding to The Rolling Stones to Rod Stewart to Mott the Hoople.” -ABC Radio Network “If Ricky Byrd wasn’t born to rock, suffice it to say he was raised in its service.” -Blurt

James A Mitchell, The Walrus and the Elephants John Lennon's Years of Revolution

Author James A. Mitchell tells the story that no one else can tell .. He has had many conversations with those who were part of it ! In late 1971 John Lennon left London and pop stardom behind and moved to New York City, eager to join a youth movement rallying for social justice and an end to the Vietnam War. Lennon was embraced by radicals and revolutionaries, the hippies and Yippies at odds with the establishment. Settling in Greenwich Village, the former Beatle was soon on the front lines of the antiwar movement, championing causes and inspiring solidarity—and suspicion. Seen as a savior by a generation in need of cultural heroes, Lennon was just as passionately hounded by a government anxious to silence enemies within its borders. The Walrus and the Elephants is told by the unlikely cast of friends, among them the members of Elephant's Memory, who were some of the few who got to know the man behind the Beatle. Exclusive interviews include writer and feminist leader Gloria Steinem; Congressional Black Caucus cofounder Ron Dellums; "Chicago Seven" veteran Rennie Davis; immigration attorney Leon Wildes; and legendary poet-activist John Sinclair, whose imprisonment for marijuana—ten years for two joints—kicked off Lennon's American journey. It was a busy year of making music and controversial TV appearances, allies and enemies. It was a time of great change in America, one that saw the end of the movements of the sixties, the beginning of a new era. The Walrus and the Elephants is a look back at that time and at the John Lennon who joined the revolution, through the eyes of those who dreamed, rallied, and fought alongside him.

Holly Stephey and Dr. Patricia O’Gorman The Resilient Woman

Dr. Patricia O’Gorman, Ph.D is an internationally-recognized public speaker known for her warm, funny, and inspiring presentations, coach, psychologist, and a consultant to Lifescape Solutions in Delray Beach, Florida. She is noted for her work on women, children of alcoholics, and trauma, in the child welfare, mental health, and substance abuse systems. Women of all ages want to make others happy it’s just in a woman’s nature, isn’t it? But what happens when that “need to please” goes wrong, and a woman keeps pushing herself harder while simultaneously ignoring her own needs? What happens when relationships sour and the trauma is carried into subsequent relationships? Noted psychologist and author Dr. Patricia O’Gorman answers these questions for today’s generation of women. This groundbreaking book reveals how girly thoughts are just conclusions women reach as a way of making sense of the trauma they’ve experienced and the resulting codependency issues they grapple with. Whether dealing with family members, coworkers, intimate relationships, or a best friend, when a woman feels “less than” she often misses the path toward achieving her true potential. Blaming herself for what someone else has done to her is, sadly, a common theme among women, but Dr. O’Gorman shows how this reaction is merely how women have been conditioned to respond then provides the tools they need to break the cycle and become more resilient.Resilience, according to Dr. O’Gorman, is the part of us that celebrates cycles: it looks forward to new beginnings and back to past lessons. Using this life-long lens, readers will learn valuable ways of looking at their interpersonal relationships .

Holly Stephey Talks to Lumonics Light & Sound Gallery

"Light has the power to create, define, and solidify; or leave in shadow that which we believe to be real."The major challenge for me in art is to keep under control the tyranny of a logical mind."Dorothy Tanner ." The spirit that moves me is capricious, unruly and irreverent. Most of my work grows out of intuitive impulse the rest gets underway by just playing.Artist Dorothy Tanner uses light as her medium along with water, plastic, fabric and her imagination. The sculptures adorning the walls and fountains on display at Lumonics are psychedelic and mesmerizing. When Tanner and her talented crew open up Lumonics for an event (which is at least every weekend), there's almost always a light show filling an entire wall, courtesy of guest videographers and designers or the Lumonics experts themselves. The space contains several rooms and display areas, with secure spots to stash coats, shoes and jaw-dropping art (don't miss the pyramid installation). Shows range from intimate world-music journeys to bass-heavy dubstep lineups to DJ workshops to ecstatic chant and dance. For an illuminating experience, there's no substitute for Lumonics. While experimenting with a vast array of media in her career as an artist, Dorothy Tanner has found acrylic to be the most rewarding. It is a material that she may sculpt, paint, sandblast, or bake and shape. Some are wall sculptures, some free-standing or hang from the ceiling, while others are water sculptures. Light is an intrinsic element of the art form. LEDs have been the primary source of lighting the works in recent years. In 1965, after traveling extensively in Europe, they established a studio in Miami. Their interest in plexiglas and its unique light transmitting quality engaged both Dorothy and Mel in experimentation that led to the major element of the Lumonics art formight. Go here for info

Holly Stephey & Diva de Lai Bob Dylan Tribute Rock Opera

Bob Dylan Tribute Rock Opera Album, Dylan at the Opera Diva de Lai is coming on to the new music scene as an innovative band that is looking to mix two unique styles, Rock and Opera. Dylan at the Opera is a concept album composed of original Bob Dylan songs rearranged in different rock styles with operatic vocals and represents their latest release.Yuval Nachtom, drummer and founder of Diva de Lai, created the concept and vision for the unique sound. Together with guitarist Eyal Sucher, who arranged the album, worked as a team on the music production.A well-rounded band, Diva de Lai is comprised of Yuval Nachtom who also holds a PhD in economics, Grammy-nominated bassist and producer Yossi Fine, Eyal Sucher, who holds a Masters degree in music, specializing in orchestra conducting, plays guitar and keyboard with mezzo-soprano and leading classical singer, Karin Shifrin as their front-woman. Señor (Tales of Yankee Power), the first single, was written by Dylan in the 1970’s and is a dark and depressing song that at the time was not understood. Though the original is simple, the lyric-heavy folk song was perfectly translated into a dramatic rock, opera sound that Shifrin captures in the cover. With her powerful delivery throughout the song, Shifrin executes the song’s messages on point. “Señor is about lack of hope, the rule of a tyrant, cruelty, lost love and maybe looking for an answer in a heavenly entity,” Nachtom states. “If we imagine that Señor is the name or nick name of a woman, then one can see here a dirge for a lost love - for a woman who walked away. The color of the lyrics and the melody present a challenge and are a natural basis for hard-core opera.” Dylan at the Opera is set to be released on October 22nd with 12 tracks to look forward to. Diva de Lai kept the classic Bob Dylan while providing their own creative spin to an original concept album.

Holly Stephey talks to Brad Elterman,

A teenage, heavily eyelinered Joan Jett mischievously flipping someone off a leering Steve Jones grabbing his crotch in an LA apartment building pool shortly after the break up of the Sex Pistols the usually reclusive Dylan posing gamely in the dressing room of the Roxy on the Sunset Strip the photographer Brad Elterman not only hung out with all the coolest people in West Coast rock n’ roll in the late 70s and early 80s he also knew how to take their picture in such a way that would capture that moment’s precise essence. For nearly three decades, Elterman gave up photography, & stowed away his cameras and the iconic photos he took during that era. Luckily for us, over the past several years, Elterman has begun to exhibit these pictures in art venues, in print and online, and, aided by their newfound popularity on his Tumblr, has even returned to photography, drawn by contemporary pop culture and the encouragement of his internet fans. From the platinum tinted shag hairdos of teenage glam rockers to the bare breasted shenanigans of coked-up south Cali party girls this is a pre-AIDS and pre-rehab world where the sun never sets and the party never ends. Elterman saw it all, and his images faithfully record that world as he knew and experienced it. Indeed, one of the signatures of Elterman’s photography is its insidery feel.  Unlike the cruelty of today’s paparazzi images, Elterman’s photographs are relaxed, chilled out. You sense a certain privileged intimacy between photographer and subject a privilege that is in turn extends to the spectator. Which makes the experience of looking at these pictures today all the more bittersweet. We’re thankful to these images for still having the power to transport us to a moment that was, but we’re also aware that the world they depict, with its innocent recklessness, is one that is unfortunately but inevitably  long gone.

Holly Stephey and Eliza Moore EP, "Everything to Me"

My latest EP, "Everything to Me" marks a courageous and exhilarating step toward a more exposed and authentic sound. All five songs represent different facets of my faith in life, in humanity and in love. Putting these songs out into the world required the perfect collaboration, and I'm infinitely grateful that Jay Nash, a long time friend and musical peer, teamed up with me to produce this EP with such care and sensitivity. Jay has aimed to pare down the extraneous harmonies, effects and solos so that my voice, lyrics and fiddle playing can be wholly revealed, inviting you into a more intimate experience of me and my songs. Eliza Moors first CD  with producer Scott Mann,Called "Simplicity," it's a compilation of songs I wrote in London. There was a lot of fun and magic in the making of it. A few years later I recorded my second, "Beauty in Mystery" in Los Angeles, with the brilliant producer and internationally acclaimed jazz musician Deron Johnson. Back in Montréal  I performed and recorded with the experimental electro-punk band Swedish Radar and played fiddle and sang with the bluegrass/roots group Althea Jean.  Both of these bands are still active, but babies, book tours (bandmate Curt Stager), boat building (bandmate Everett Smith) and other such events have created a few detours along the way. In 2010 I had my baby boy Xavier, and life became more about being with family and treasuring bath time and sand box play.  Jeremy and I have continued to write and record material together in a group we call, "JE", but this EP marks my next step back out into the world as, well, myself.

Holly Stephey with Sheila Swift "The Shape of Things''

Rock-star-in-waiting Sheila Swift makes no bones about a few things: she’s from Houston, which she’ll proudly announce at the top of her live set even when playing at worlds-away venues like the cat club and the whiskey a go go on the Los Angeles strip.  She’s evolved into a full fledged rock singer, largely leaving behind the pop-rock leanings of her previous work in favor of a more pure rock sound, which shines through on the new material that she and her band debuted at a pair of shows in LA this March after a stop-off in Austin at SXSW And despite taking the serious-seeming move of turning up all the knobs on her music of late, she likes to laugh. Sheila Swift recently ventured on 5 week tour in Germany and the Netherlands. On her European tour, Swift gave audiences renditions of her new songs which manage to maintain the resonance of her earlier work while flexing a new found rock edge. Ecstatic European fans described Sheila as a mix of Gwen Stefani and Neil Young.  She’s got the kind of offstage affability to lightheartedly joke around about the fact that she shares a last name with country star Taylor Swift (no relation, for the record), and enough whimsy to have named her twin baby girls “Dylan” and “Marley” after the two greatest Bob's in the history of music. After several years in progress and a recent tour in Europe, her new anticipated EP album, "The Striving is Over", is ready to be released on August 13th in the US.  In this new album, Sheila sings songs inspired by personal, yet inspiring experiences of her life, transmitting a positive and uplifting message. But that's not it! Following "The Striving is over", Sheila Swift has more musical endeavors up her sleeve. Swift plans a vinyl album release, by the end of the year, incorporating tracks from the latest EP.

Holly Stephey Talks to Labretta Suede &The Motel 6

Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are a bunch of crazed rock ‘n’ rollers with a reckless set and a show of music and outfits you could just LICK! With a 50′s rock ‘n’ roll influence, a twang and some dirge, Labretta Suede and The Motel 6 are an ass whippin’, high kickin’, low down rockin’ an-a-reelin’, high-class outfit. Formed in 2005 in Auckland, New Zealand with influences wide throughout the decades before them of damn good music. This band brings back the true essence of roots based rock n roll, punk and rockabilly blues.Fronted by bad girl tease Labretta Suede, with her sexy gritty performances, full frontal outfits and irresistible, irreverent, deep rich vocals that simply undress and unleash you while, right-hand flesh eating Johnny Moondog makes you completely unhinged with his wild tone, crazed reverb and mind bending psychedelic distortion and sneer. These two unruly and insatiable founding members are the essence behind this world traveled jungle of juju strange.Complimented by their original New Zealand counterparts, Chris ‘Bumbo’ Kemp  and JayL Vodanovich  who kept their heads cool to lay down the slosh, so as not to drown. This melding of nostalgic, yet originally infused swagger was at the fore front of bad-ass rock n roll car culture, b -grade art, cinema and burlesque in their faraway shores of Aotearoa (New Zealand). However, feeling the fever to spread the disease long and far from the way down under pools of volcanic laha, they relocated to the other side of the planet. That’s right, to New York City.Seeking to find just the right kinda strange to fit their new line-up. Cue, Max Speed . A man of 50′s super hero physic and proportions yet with dainty ankles for high-heel wearing and stocking steeling. However, all would not be complete without drummer Capt’n Gerry. So, the new line-up of fiends was born. http://www.labrettasuede.com/wordpress/

John Holmstrom PUNK magazine & Monte A Melnick The Ramones!

In 1975 John Holmstrom co-founded PUNK magazine with Ged Dunn, JR. It spear-headed the punk movement and was instrumental in the success of Blondie, The Ramones, the Dead Boys and other New York City punk bands. Its hand-lettered graphics inspired many crudely-designed fanzines in its wake, and its feature-length photo comics predated the graphic novels of today. PUNK also created the punk art, a short-lived but long-forgotten movement that inspired the East Village art scene a few years later. John Holmstrom has also drawn posters, t-shirt designs, record, book and CD covers for The Ramones, Blondie, The Dandy Warhols, Murphy’s Law, MeatDepressed, The Kowalskis, The Cooties and Mykel Board. He also produced work for Scholastic, the Village Voice, High Times, Heavy Metal, Video Games and many other magazines. In 2000, 25 years after starting it, Holmstrom re-launched PUNK magazine, publishing several new issues, a comic book (Bosko), and in 2013 a book: The Best of PUNK Magazine. He’s currently licensing PUNK- and Holmstrom-related images and artwork for clothing everything from baby clothes to high-end fashion-around the world. He also contributed art, graphics and animation to the upcoming CBGB Film, which will be released on October 10th in theaters around the country.*Monte A. Melnick was the Ramones Tour Manager (and much more) throughout their entire 22 year career (1974-1996, 2,263 live shows). His book “On The Road with the Ramones” is an insider’s look from the people who were actually there, witnessing and experiencing all the extreme highs and lows of one of rock's greatest bands. The book is packed with interviews from the Ramones and people who where very close to the band. There are over 250 photographs and pictures of memorabilia Monte collected along the way.  Monte now works at The New York Hall of Science in Corona Queens New York as their 3D Theater Audio/Visual Supervisor.
